Phillip’s Brewing Co. , Victoria, British Colombia

  • 8.2%ABV
  • Pours a good full head, light and frothy.
  • Brilliant ruby red colour highlights through out.
  • Smells similar to an IPA with a strong hop bitterness and sweetness without the typical citrus, pine and floral notes.
  • Very dry bitterness on the taste with the overall flavours a little flat. The only thing really coming through is a pine tree bitter note.
  • Not especially well balanced.
  • Perhaps this years batch was not as good as previous years, as I remember this as being a fantastic beer in the past.

Phillips Brewing Co., Victoria, B.C.

  • 5% ABV
  • Contains: Licorice, wintergreen, anise seeds, spearmint, ginger, nutmeg, sarsaparilla
  • Thick, Bubbly, root beer like head…should have poured it into a frosty A&W mug!
  • Cloudy, muddy water, brown colour
  • Strong black licorice aroma, spicy note, and a cleansing mint smell.
  • Flavour is nothing like contemporary root beer, maybe more reminiscent of original recipes?
  • Tasted like watered down mouthwash with a hint of licorice. Doesn’t taste much like beer either, although it is refreshing.
  • I think this is an interesting idea for a beer, but in this case it’s a miss for Phillips.
  • This was a sessional offering from Phillips, so finding it may be next to impossible.

Phillips Brewing Co., Victoria, B.C

  • 5.2%ABV
  • Head doesn’t stick around for long, but leaves a light frothy coating over the beer.
  • Very black colour, one of the darkest we have had to date.
  • Strong aroma of roasted, slightly charred oats.
  • Chocolate comes through much more in the taste than aroma, slightly bitter with a sweetness balance.  Roasted oats comes though a bit as well.
  • Can be picked up anywhere fine beers are sold.  Willow Park, zyn, co-op.

Philips Brewing Company,  Victoria, British Columbia

  • 6.5%ABV
  • Wonderful golden straw colour with a light head.
  • Very floral aroma, with a hint of honey sweetness.
  • Pleasant sweetness opens on the palate balanced well with a subtle bitterness, slightly citrus with honeywax.
  • A nice, well balanced IPA from Philips, very enjoyable for those IPA fans out there, pick it up from any fine liquor and beer merchant.
