SANTA’S PRIVATE RESERVE ALE

Posted in Ales, Christmas/Winter, Reviews with tags , , , , , , , on February 1, 2012 by calgarybeerdrinkers

Rogue Ales,  Newport, Oregon

  • 5.3%ABV  65IBu
  • Consistently  carbonated throughout, head pours strong but disintegrates rather quickly.
  • Nice copper-rust colour.
  • Yeasty aroma with a slight sweetness that brightens it up.
  • First thing noticed on the palate is a light tingle from the heavy carbonation.  This ale is very clean, crips and refreshing with an orange pith like bitterness.
  • Pretty decent christmas ale from the fine people at Rogue, worth a try with dinner amongst friends with it’s still available.  Pick it up anywhere Rogue is sold, which is most liquor stores with a half descent beer selection.

SAMUEL SMITH’S WINTER WELCOME ALE

Posted in Ales, Christmas/Winter, Reviews with tags , , , , , on February 1, 2012 by calgarybeerdrinkers

Samuel Smith Old Brewery,  Tadcaster, England

  • 6.0%ABV
  • Frothy head like whipped egg whites.  Very clear rusty orange colour.
  • The aroma is weak, incredibly faint and only slightly fruity, when left to come to temperature the aroma falls off entirely.
  • The taste isn’t that much better, unpleasantly and unnaturally sweet with a chemical taste and overall mouthfeel falls very flat.
  • An unfortunately disappointing winter time selection from Samuel Smith, if you are interested Co-op, Zyn and Kensington carry it.
